Kelly Lake Sportsman’s Club, Inc.

The Kelly Lake Sportsman’s Club, Inc. was founded in 1977 by lovers of the sports and the great outdoors.  We hold several fund raisers each year to benefit our wonderful lake and the wildlife around it.  We hold winter and summer fishing contests along with a deer hunting contest each fall for all of our members to participate in.

Each January we hold our annual ice fishing derby.  Hundreds of prizes are awarded through raffles and fishing contests.  With the proceeds of this year’s event, we were able to donate $1000 to the Oconto County K-9 Unit and $1000 to the Town of Brazeau Dive Team.  Both units operate on donations and both are very important to the citizens that they serve.

We take our environment very seriously.  Each spring before the ice goes out on the lake, several of our members gather to walk the lake and pick up any debris left behind from the winter fishermen and snowmobile riders.  This helps to insure the lake is kept clean.  Also for Earth Day in April, we walk the roadsides and pick up debris from the ditches and lake outlets.  Mother Nature is always smiling when we are through.

June brings our annual Helping Hands Day.  This event is one of our favorites.  We invite residents of Oconto County that are mentally or physically challenged.  We treat them to a day of trout fishing, horse and wagon rides, mini golf, live music, games, prizes and a picnic lunch.  Approximately 100 citizens attend each year and we are proud to be hosting our 16th annual event this year.

For Spring High School Graduation we offer a yearly scholarship to an area student who plans to further their education in the conservation field.  Students who choose to study Forestry, Wildlife, Fishery, Habitat Management, or DNR Warden may apply.  This is the future of our earth.  This summer we are also sponsoring a college student from Gillett that will be studying World Wildlife Management and Global Warming in Europe and Iceland.  We are very proud of our youth who take on such vital issues.

Fall is also a busy time for us.  Each year we raise and release 100 pheasants into the wild.  This is done to insure the pheasant population stays healthy and plentiful for the future.  Our major contribution is our game fish stocking in Kelly Lake.  Last year we stocked $10,000 worth of Walleye and Perch.  We also constructed ten new fish cribs for the lake for the small fry to hide in.  The cost of the new cribs was about $1000.

On July 5th, 2008 our plans for a Chicken Booyah Sale will benefit Matzo and Dory & the Orphans.  We are proud to sponsor Matzo as the work she does for our wildlife is awesome and so needed.  We truly appreciate all that she does for us and the little creatures.
