Press Release 4-6-2007 |
Logan had the misfortune of being sold to a pet store in Endicott, NY, who then sold him to a homeless man as a breeder male (at a very tender young age) The homeless man was uneducated in Coatimundi care and when the most recent very nasty storm hit the state of New York, he set him loose from the homeless shelter by opening a window (obviously thinking he was giving Logan his best chance for survival since this now ~14week old baby Coatimundi would not be allowed into any shelter that this man went to). Logan spent 8 very cold, lonely days struggling to survive without food or water or real shelter from the cold. He is such a strong little creature. | Newest
Press Release 8-12-2007: .... I survived being set loose into a small wooded area in Albany, NY for 8 days during the time when all the Noreasters came through. I was out in below freezing temperatures for 8 days trying to find food, water and shelter. I am a tropical creature and I was only 14weeks old when this happened. I have healed from severe frostbite to my nose and tail tip. All 4 feet had to have radical surgeries performed, including skin grafting surgery to save what could be saved. . If I had not been sold to a homeless man who did not have a choice; due to, having to find shelter for himself, I would most likely still be in one piece..... |
Logan's story then takes another sad turn when his severe and extensive frostbite was downplayed by the first clinic that saw him and evaluated him. Logan in pain and fear started attempting to rid himself of his dead feet. Logan was then driven an arduous 13 hours to Raleigh, NC where emergency surgery was performed at 4 am on March 25, 2007 [now 10 days for Logan]. One-half of all 4 of Logan's feet had to be removed to stop the progression of the moist gangrene that had set in and to hopefully save this very brave animal's life. Thick wet/dry dressings were applied along with a harness and an Elizabethan collar (E-collar), that is secured to the harness. The E-collar is to keep Logan from attempting any further damage to his already very damaged extremities. Logan is receiving a combination of pain medications that are given at 4 hour intervals to allow him to sleep pain free and heal and feel well enough to eat. Logan is also on a combination of broad spectrum antibiotics twice daily to control his infection. He also must be put under anesthesia daily to allow for foot soaks in warmed antiseptic and fresh dressing application to occur. This little Coatimundi has gained 2.5 pounds despite his extreme losses and he is quite feisty when he does not want to do something.
Please let Logan be a lesson to all, that responsible pet ownership starts with the breeder providing a healthy new born and all the correct information that goes with that pet and that the new borns are only sold to those who can provide appropriate homes for them.

Hey out there It's Logan here.
How is everyone out there? doc has been working really hard and now I
have a chance to post. I have a new pic for everyone to see. A
couple of my new toys are in the pic too. I also got a new wiggly
giggly ball that Doc gave me and I love shaking it and rolling it
around to make it make noise.
so, everyone tell me how you are out there.

Well, Doc caught all us coatis having a nose contest. So, who has the
better looking nose. mine is the big one shoved right into the camera
lens thing. Igby is by himself and Ru and Cheyanne are together up on
the shelf with Ru on the left and cheychey on the right.
Logan
Hey everyone.
Wow,
I had a great playdate with Ru the other night. Ru is very big but he
is gentle as a lamb and I really enjoyed hanging out with him and
showing him how a little guy can get under things and behind things. As
you can see in the one pic the Doc took of me, my nose scar is almost
completely gone and you can also see just how small I am compared to big
old Mr. Ru. did you guys know that the Ru is 7yrs old this year and
cheyanne is 6yrs old this year. You can see in the one pic the doc got
when I stood still long enough, just how well my feet are healing up.
Auntie Denise thinks they are healed up nicely, but they still have more
healing to go. I have to develop calluses so I don't bleed to easily
from my grafts when I am walking around and playing. Auntie Denise got
to hold me, but boy was I scared of her. She tried to make me feel
comfortable but it takes me a long long time to be able to relax with
new people.Anyways, I've recovered and am bouncy tonight and playng hard
to get with the doc. she brought home wonderful leftovers from her
dinner with her friends tonight doc also gave me fresh grapes from her
garden and mango and blueberries. I had the best dinner.
Well, off to shuffle around for my evening exercise.
Later my peeps.

The
Doc just got back from her Birthday party at her brother's and he gave
her the most wonderful surprise he could have given her. He stopped by
his friend David Sovero's art gallery earlier today and picked up the
portrait the Doc asked David Sovero to do for her and it is so perfect.
She showed me and boy do I look cute in this portrait. Sovero captured
my impish innocence and he even colored in the my nose leather so I
wouldn't be embarassed about my scar (even though it is almost all
gone). These pics are a little dark, Doc says but hopefully all of you
can see me through David's eyes.
Doc doesn't want me mentioning her Bday, but too late I've done it....hehehe.
I think she should be embarassed just like she has embarassed me with
some of the pics she has taken of me.
Oh, the Doc doesnt know, but I am also attaching a pic of her garden she
took from 30ft away and 15ft up on her back porch, there is also a close
up of one of her tomatoe plants and some of her zuccini plants. She is
really proud of her garden. she is always talking about if I would walk
on a leash better she would let me come help in the garden. Although, I
would probably have to eat all the baby green tomatoes and baby squashes
that are out there right now.
Okay, I'm up the creek now. Doc is here gotta run.

From Dory & the Orphans Guest Book Date: 20 May 2007 Time: 07:34:55 Comments: Hi Logan! You don't know me, but I am your Auntie "T". I have been reading and keeping up with your story since it was posted. I've Prayed and Prayed for you, and just look at you now! You are one amazing little boy. I am so happy that all these nice people are helping you and caring for you. You are so special to everyone. I would consider it an honor to be alble to meet you someday. Now, you be a good boy and learn to wear your booties, OK? and when you are walking real good in them, have Doc take your picture because I love seeing you! :-)) Love, tanya (auntie "T") May 17, 2007
Okay, so I told you the Doc would do it!! She came home and took these
pics, including me looking at one of those silly kitties jumping past
me, which made me look all crazy eyed. Gosh I hate it when she catches
me with one of those crazy looks on my faces.
I am really enjoying my new space and being with everyone else now that
I am all healed up.
Logan the Fierce
3:55 pm Stretching my legs!!
The Doc says that now that I am all healed up and Lace (my foster
sister-doggie) has gone to her new home I have new living quarters!!!
They are twice the size of my old quarters and I love them. I can see
the other animals and the kitties come and visit me and try to steal my
toys, which I let them know they can't have them. Also, and best yet I
can see and talk to Ru, Baby Cheyanne and Igby and boy do I like that.
I got so excited that I even tried to climb a little, but I couldn't
hold on very well and I fell into my new hammie from Auntie Joy. Which
the new hammie isn't going to be big enough for very long. I am hitting
close to 7# now and the Doc says this is very good. My new living
quarters are at level with the Doc's face and I like this, she doesn't
look so big to me anymore (of course, I think I heard she's kind of a
"shrimp" anyways.....). Well, I'm sure the Doc will take more
embarassing pics of me later, but I got her back by stealing one of her
fuzzy slippers and claiming it. She has to learn that payback is a
Coati's prerogative.

well I have to recommend a full body massage (or near full body) any day
or night of the week that it is offered to you. I finally let the Doc
really touch and scratch my head tonight and it felt so good that as I
started to fall asleep she started petting me and scratching me along my
shoulders and back and my flank areas and boy did that feel good. I
woke up when she stopped. She says she wished she had someone waiting
on her hand and foot, feeding her all sorts of wonderfully prepared
meals and massaging her too. I just think she's jealous....hehehe.....

Well world, I am one naked Coati and I feeeeeelllll goooooddddd
.
The Doc says that
my
back feet are scabbed over well enough and in only 2 small spots; so, I
can have my ecollar off. Boy does it feel good to be able to scratch
behind my ears or better yet, act pitiful and convince the Doc to do all
the hard work. She took a really embarassing pic of me getting ready to
be neutered (don't know what that means, but I do know I woke up feeling
kind of strange down below). Doc sure was smiling though and she made
sure I got this great fruit salad when I was awake enough-grapes,
watermelon, cantelope, banana, peach and apple. Yum, boy was that great
and made up for her making me get woozy again, but she says I hopefully
won't have to get woozy again for a verrrrryyy long time. Yeah...

From Dory & the Orphans Guest book: Date: 12 May 2007 Time: 21:01:31 Comments: Geez, Logan, we are so NOT bored with your updates!!! But we don't have much to say back except you keep on keepin' on, little guy. You don't want to hear stuff like, "Yeah, Beau pooped a real poop today so Mom was all excited and wanted to bronze the stupid thing." We figured you were afraid to make a break for the computer with that other critter around. We saw the picture and it looks a lot like a cat thing, but BIG. Mom is still waiting for Uncle Sam and is getting kind of nervous that she might get audited, whatever that is. VERY good to hear that you're doing so well! Please give Doc Sandy a kiss for all of us so she knows how much we appreciate all the time and love and good care she's giving you. (A kiss is like a bite but without the teeth. Try it - two-leggers give you all kinds of good treats when you kiss them!) Love you! The Hiss, Bite and Swat Team May 10, 2007 12:53 pm Hey Logan
Matzo,
I'm doing great!!!! Doc hasn't been letting me on the computer thing
because she says that I need to chill out on the emails and it seems
that everyone was getting bored with my updates since no one was really
emailing me back, except a few loyal friends.I am now completely naked
of wraps as of today. I still have a few very small areas at the
tips of my back stumps that need to finish healing, but Doc says I
really need to go without the wraps now and get the tissue to harden up.
My front stumps look great, but are very sensitive. So, hopefully next
week I will have my back feet scabbed over and I can go on some short
walk abouts and hopefully I can even have the ecollar thing off; so, the
radio stations around the world can quite broadcasting to me. Doc
says that she is very surprised by the amount of new dark pigment I have
developed on the bottom of my right front foot and also the new pigment
that is coming in on my nose scar. She says I may get lucky and
not look so much like Rodolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer for life (
although, I must say I like reindeer and don't think it would be so very
bad to look like one).......
Shoot here comes Doc, I have to scamper as best i can. Still
getting used to walking on my stumps without any cover right now.
Logan the Fierce
7:39 am Hey Logan April 30, 2007 3:00 pm Hey World
I'm
naked on my front feet. Doc says that with some bitter apple applied, I
should be trustworthy enough to go without front foot wraps while in my
cage. I have tried to be good all day, but sometimes a guy has got to
clean his feet up, after all. I still need the back ones for a few more
days. My back feet were really bad off and they are taking a little
longer to heal, but Doc says they are doing very very well. Hopefully
by the end of next week I can have all four "feet" naked of wraps.
Hey Auntie Matzo, my moccasins came today, but I can easily get them
off. Auntie Toni and Doc tried real hard to keep them on me, but they
just slipped right off when I crossed my arms and swipped. They are
trying to figure it out. I like them though, they are nice and soft a
squishy on my sensitive stumps.
Later guys.
Logan
April 23rd - 27th, 2007 April 21, 2007 1:58 pm Yeehawwww
The Doc is exstatic today, with my feet. She says that by this Monday
to latest Wednesday I won't need to have my heavy protective wraps on
anymore. I will just need light protective wraps, because my feet will
be healed up
enough that that will be all I will need.
Hey Auntie Joy, the Doc got a pic of me sleeping in my hammie last night
and you can see just how big I have gotten and she now teases me in the
morning about my "bed tail" that I now get each morning.
The Doc also got some pics of me getting my lunch and they show my
already smaller wraps and my right flank all healed up. I wouldn't let
her get pics of my left flank, because I mean hey a guy can only deal
with having so many pics taken at any one time.

Guest Book April 19, 2007 11:57 pm
Logan,
Are you sure you aren't a waccoon? We
had a waccoon stayin here for awhile and that was one messy boy! He put
all his toys, blankies, food, everything...all in his water bowl. We
girls found it very gross. ha ha. And for the record, we don't like
those apricot things either but we sure do love those big ones mommy
calls peeches..YUM!
Joy, Kairi, and Mei Mei
RIP my sweet angel Tamarind 10:37 pm Logan here, gotta question
what the heck is an apricot????? the doc gave me one in a mix tonight.
she says that they taste good and if you are, well you know, they can
help. But she says I don't have an issue in that department...what goes
in comes out regularly. So, what on earth!!! I told her I don't like
them and to not give me any more. She tried to get me to not be upset
by offering me more of the roaster chicken, but I am playing hard to
get.
Oh,.... I did it again, I put everything I possibly could into my water
dish and then sat back and waited for her to notice and if you could be
a fly on the wall and see the face she made when she had to clean all
that up....well you guys would die!
Heeeehheee

12:07 am
No one else but the doc to bite and she tastes very good....hehhehe
slept great last night after getting my new wraps and the doc taking
care of the areas of my grafts that finally gave it up. Yeah.
Logan
Re:Yeahhhh
Awwwwww, Logan. You may want to rethink your
strategy. Our mommy keeps telling us we should not bite the hand that
feeds, so we bite daddy more...ha ha ha
Joy, Kairi, and Mei Mei
RIP my sweet angel Tamarind April 18, 2007 11:30 pm Enough is enough
someone come to my rescue. the doc took me in just a few minutes ago
and did a wrap change on me, which means getting woozy and it was all
because she caught me chewing my left rear wrap past my ecollar (which I
haven't done before). Well, it was because it was itchy, my graft there
failed for full thickness, but has taken by 50% partial thickness and
that made things very itchy for me tonight. My left front is 100%
taking for full thickness as well as my right rear and the right front
is going to be ~30% for full thickness (which is okay since that one has
a very small area to heal at this point).
She did give me a fantastic treat when we got back here, I got a bunch
of my favorite mix of dried fruit and berries that she gets for me and
sometimes I will share with the Doc if she is nice and behaves.
Well, yawwwnnnn, I am beat. Off to sleep in my hammie.
Logan the Fierce
8:37 pm Yeahhhh
I am making the doc crazy. I am having a great time destroying my cage
all day today. I have been enjoying seeing her reaction each time she
checks me and she is finding that I am putting all I can into my water
dish and my hammie. It is very funny, she has to give me new bedding
and clean water and food. She says I am worse than any other imp she
has ever had to take care of. I have even let her scratch my nose and
the top of my head without nipping her. Shhhhhh don't tell her I am
lulling him into a false sense of security. I will get her good and
comfortable and then nail her, heeheehee.
Logan The Fierce
2:47 pm
Auntie Joy
Thank you for my new hammies and blankies. Although, I think it's a
whole lot more fun to steal the hand towels and paper towels from the
Doc. I like laughing at her when she finds me in my hammie with all the
things I've stolen.
Logan
April 17, 2007 2:02 pm Yawwwwnnnnn, sleepy time
The doc and I woke up extra early today (for no good reason). I took
advantage and did some extra eating. The doc said I could stay back and
rest today in my hammie, that I don't have to go to the clinic since
today is an off day for wrap changes. In fact, I don't have to get
woozy until Thursday!!! Yeah! I like this extra time between getting
woozy. My sides have been very itchy lately and the doc says that she
will take my sutures out this weekend when she takes hers out, I can't
wait.
The doc was telling me last night that many people have been very
generous so far with my medical bills, since I can't earn my own money
at least not yet. She says though that everyone out there needs to keep
finding a few dollars to give and ask friends to do the same. my medical
bills come to $5000.00 and the doc has donated back $3000.00 that
includes all of her time with me 24/7 and boy is she attentive and all
of her time doing my surgeries. Please don't forget about me. I will
still need intensive care for the next few monthes and I don't want the
doc to say she can't continue to help me because the fund is not able to
help with my medical expenses.
Thank you everyone for your love and prayers.

48 hr grafts
Well, the Doc had to change my wraps a day earlier than she had planned because we got another thunderstorm last night and I got scared and peed on my rear wraps. I did better overall though, the Doc 3/4 covered my cage with blankets and pillows to muffle the noise and so it wasn't too bad. I also had this great new hammie that Auntie Joy made for me and I was sleeping in it mostly comfortable for the night. The Doc even got a pic of me in the hammie, I mean geesh can't a guy get some sleep without pics being taken!

April 7, 2007 5:21 pm Having a really
good day today. The Doc made me get woozy, but that was okay because
when I woke up she kept telling me just how good my feet are healing.
She says I can have my first skin graft for the bottoms of my feet, to
help them heal faster, towards the end of next week to the beginning of
the following week. She says that my granulation beds are very healthy
and have recovered very well from the skin advancements she did this
past week.
Auntie Janni has emailed the people who make the "muckluck shoes"
(that's what the Doc calls them) to see if they might make me real good
booties once Aunt Toni makes me a prototype and the Doc tries them out
with me. It's crazy how many people are trying to help me out.
Doc is also very excited that I am weighing 5.5# today!! I have gained
3.3# in 2 weeks time. I am never without food or water and I am never
too cold or warm, Doc is very "particular" about my care. The other
peeps at her clinic say that the Doc is really protective of me and
"particular".
